about

This collection celebrates the diversity of Bulgarian music. People new to Balkan folk music sometimes think that we occupy a small musical niche. In reality, folk songs from southeastern Europe are so abundant that we rarely find ourselves short of material. Bulgaria’s immense wealth of melodies and arrangements for women’s voices alone could fill albums like this many times over. With the assistance of Jack Straw Productions, we were happy to explore the variety of Bulgarian folk styles and degrees of arrangement—from strident Shope duets like Spava Mi Se to the six parts on Rasodi Se Tenka Neda, from close harmonies to full-choir sound. We are especially grateful to the local Balkan musicians who joined us so that we could also include a couple of songs for dancing.

This CD is dedicated to the Bulgarian immigrant community in the Seattle area and to our local folk musicians and dancers, two groups that welcomed us and made sharing this music possible.
