about

Whether arranged or freely chosen, marriage in Eastern European cultures historically marked a dramatic change in a woman’s life. She would leave her childhood home and join her new husband’s family, becoming a member of their household, with new responsibilities. On her wedding day, the bride inhabited the liminal space between childhood and maturity, between innocence and experience, and between the bitter and the sweet.

In folk songs throughout the region, weddings are anticipated with both joy and sadness. We meet a girl sneaking away from her mother’s watchful eye to steal a sweetheart’s kiss and a girl stolen away by a dragon. A young woman bids farewell to her friends and her garden and another ceremonially bathes in the sea in preparation to meet her beloved new husband. There’s a tender flirtation at the bubbling fountain and a tearful goodbye at the front gate. Boys and girls dance in two lines under the moon and a wedding veil dances in the wind.
